*Google does not use the keyword metatag to rank its search results

Pondering about a good topic for a presentation at the upcoming IRIS201o IT-Law conference in Salzburg 25th-26th Feb. next year I stumbled across a blog enty on Google’s official blog in which Matt Cutts of Google states in plain language that Google ignores the keyword meta tag for the ranking of its web search results. He explains that this is the case because “the keywords meta tag was so often abused, many years ago Google began disregarding the keywords meta tag.”

Still, although Google ignores the “keyword” meta tag it supports several other meta tags and uses e.g. the use the “description” meta tag as the text for its search results snippets. (for an example please see the picture below)

For more information on the nature of meta tags please refer to the collective wisdom on Wikipedia, a great post by Danny Sullivan or the Google Support page.

For a summary of how law practitioners around the globe currently deal with this apparently never-ending  issue, please refer to the latest post of Eric Goldman on this topic who is closing his post with a beautiful sentence:

Now that we have confirmation that the dominant search engine disregards keyword metatags, let’s hope judges do the same.

What a daydreamer optimist Eric is!ūüėČ
