*Online Game Educates Teens about Advertising In Social Media

The NYT today reported about an online-game that should educate teenagers to “start to understand the commercial world they live in and to be alert to, and think critically, of advertising“. In a nutshell this approach aims at “teaching kids how to swim in the ocean of advertising“.

The game, (which I of course had to play for the sake of academia) unfortunately did not cover advertising on search engines but dealt with a wide range of other advertising techniques such as “cellphone-ads” or “ads on social networks“.  For a full list of ads covered, please see here.

Two thumbs up!

.

At this point I’d also like to promote an Austrian Saferinternet.at group which also -very successfully- works in the field of ‘media literacy‘ (unfortunately only available in German).
